What is body sculpting, and is it right for me?

May 9, 2023

Body sculpting, also known as body contouring or body shaping, refers to a variety of cosmetic procedures or non-invasive treatments aimed at enhancing the appearance and contours of the body. The primary goal of body sculpting is to improve the overall shape and proportions of various body areas, such as the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, and more. Body sculpting treatments can be performed on both men and women over the age of 18.

There are different approaches to body sculpting, ranging from surgical to non-surgical methods. Surgical methods have more significant results and allow for results to be achieved much faster. However, there are significant health risks associated with cosmetic surgery, lengthy recovery periods and wait times before surgery. These treatments are also often much more costly than their non-surgical alternatives.

Some common surgical techniques that help sculpt a person’s body include:

  • Liposuction
  • Tummy tucks
  • Body lifts

Non-surgical body sculpting

Non-surgical body sculpting treatments can target the fat, skin and shape of a person and improve the overall appearance of their body long term. Often results are long lasting, but it may more time to achieve noticeable change with non-surgical treatments.

Non-surgical body contouring treatments can be effective in reducing unwanted fat deposits and improving the overall appearance of the body. However, their effectiveness may vary depending on several factors, including the specific treatment used, the individual’s body type, and their expectations.

Non-surgical body contouring treatments typically use technologies such as cryolipolysis (fat freezing), ultrasound (ultrasound cavitation), laser, or radiofrequency energy to target and destroy fat cells. These treatments are designed to reduce fat in specific areas without the need for surgery or significant downtime.

While non-surgical treatments can provide noticeable improvements, they generally produce more subtle results compared to surgical procedures like liposuction. Multiple treatment sessions may be required to achieve the desired outcome, and results may take several weeks or months to become fully apparent.

Who is body sculpting right for?

Body sculpting treatments can be suitable for individuals who are generally in good health and have specific concerns regarding the shape and contour of their body. The ideal candidates for body sculpting treatments typically fall into the following categories:

  1. People with stubborn fat that can’t seem to be shifted with exercise and diet alone. Fat reduction treatments such as fat freezing can help break down the excess fat cells, which will help prevent fat coming back quickly to the target area
  2. Women with post-pregnancy changes to their body, such as stretched skin, excess loose stomach fat and stretch marks which have appeared following their pregnancy. It is important to note that most surgical and non-surgical body sculpting treatments are not available for women who are breastfeeding, and women should wait at least 3 months following birth to undergo any treatment. This period may be longer following difficult birth or c-section birth.
  3. Post-weight loss, where the body has loose deposits of fat and excess skin build up.

Post-weight loss body sculpting treatments

After achieving weight loss, many individuals desire to further enhance their physique through body sculpting techniques. Body sculpting focuses on reshaping and toning specific areas of the body to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Other than body contouring treatments people may also be able to sculpt their body further using exercise to tone and strengthen their muscles. Popular exercises for body toning include yoga, pilates, HIIT, weight lifting and strengthening classes including circuits.

For people who have achieved significant weight loss the body sculpting treatment that is often most favoured is skin tightening body treatment.

Body skin tightening treatments aim to improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin, especially in areas where it may have become loose or saggy due to factors such as aging, weight loss, or pregnancy. There are several methods used for body skin tightening, and each works differently. However, all skin tightening treatments aim to improve the skin’s natural processes and stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin for long term improvements.

Where there is significant excess skin the only effective option is surgery. However, for most non-surgical alternatives can and should be considered as there are less risks, less costs and less down-time.

Popular non-surgical body skin tightening

The most popular non-surgical body skin tightening treatments are:

Radiofrequency Therapy. This treatment utilizes radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, which will cause the existing collagen fibres to contract and stimulates the production of new collagen. This process helps tighten and firm the skin over time.

Laser Therapy. Laser treatments can achieve amazing results using precise lasers to deliver targeted energy to the skin. This energy heats the underlying tissues, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin tightening. Laser therapy can be fractional, targeting specific areas, or non-ablative, affecting the deeper layers of the skin without causing damage to the skin’s surface.

Ultrasound Therapy: Ultrasound treatments use focused ultrasound energy to generate heat deep within the skin. The heat stimulates collagen production, resulting in skin tightening and lifting effects. Ultrasound therapy is commonly used for body contouring and skin tightening on larger areas of the body.

Infrared Therapy: Infrared light treatments use infrared radiation to heat the collagen fibres within the skin. The heat stimulates collagen remodelling and contraction, leading to skin tightening effects. Infrared therapy can be applied topically or through devices that emit infrared light.

The role of exercise and diet

No body sculpting treatment can replace exercise and a healthy diet. You should always think about how to improve your wellbeing first when you think about improving your appearance. Body sculpting treatments don’t improve your health and wellbeing, and if you don’t commit to a healthy lifestyle weight gain will incur, undoing much of the achievements of body sculpting, likely in a short amount of time.

Exercise and diet do not only help with weight management. A healthy lifestyle will further lead to improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength and tone, enhanced mental health, improved energy levels and better sleep quality.
